Nearly every state offers section 529 plans for families who wish to save money for their children's college expenses. The quality of each plan, in terms of the possible fees, rules and regulations will vary. Some plans allow the account owner to change beneficiaries, while others do not. The Alabama Higher Education 529 fund allows Alabama residents to open an account for as little as $250, or with a $25 per month automatic payment investment plan. There are no account or brokerage fees, so all of the money invested goes towards your child's fund. Gains and withdrawals are not subject to federal and state income taxes.
