Shipping by Rail

In many areas, rail is the most viable form of shipping. This is especially true for many landlocked countries that would otherwise have no other practical way of moving large quantities of good economically. Trains can be configured to accept wide varieties of cargo and often, all that is needed to increase a train’s capacity is to add more cars. However, there are practical limitations that keep trains from being as economical as ships for moving vast quantities of cargo. Rail gauge standards for one thing, make it difficult to compete with ship for economy.
